We return to the top 50 list to bring you the first actual installment and present to you the first twenty players! Big thanks to Mavfatha majesiu Moosecop and iamslm22 for the write-ups and the voting in this installment. The payout from this thread should go to each of them 25% (none to me).

For those unaware, here is the introduction post again: Introduction

Without further ado, here is the list:

50) 2B Clem Johnson - New York Voyagers https://i.imgur.com/1mBRoMe.png - 4.83

.266/.331/.343, 428 AB, 2 HR, 29 RBI, 92 wRC+, 1.1 WAR, -4.8 ZR, 1/1 SB/CS

If we had a top 50 list for S4, I've got to imagine Clem wouldn't have been even close, but he did enough in his second season in the league to sneak into the final spot. He was a slightly below average hitter in terms of OPS+ and wRC+, finishing with a 92 in each. He also struggled to adjust to full-time shortstop duty; 9 errors is pretty solid, but Clem couldn't quite get to all the batted balls one would expect. Despite these less-than-stellar final stats in some areas, Clem did have some redeeming qualities as well, as he had the 10th most walks taken with 40, scored a solid 55 runs out of his team's 396 total, was named to the All-Star game, and received a single third-place vote for Gold Glove. Most impressively, he tied for the league lead with 6 triples.

49) SP Anna Joosten - Death Valley Scorpions https://i.imgur.com/KfiO1hh.png - 5.00

11-8 W-L, 4.28 ERA, 166.0 IP, 5.15 K/9, 1.28 WHIP, 0.9 WAR, 98 ERA+

The Scorpions #2 starter in Season 5, Anna Joosten has now finished with exactly 11 wins for the team in 3 straight seasons. Joosten certainly had some wildness issues this season, walking 59 and throwing 7 wild pitches. She also managed solid top 10 finishes in areas such as WHIP and complete games, though she was helped by the third lowest BABIP in the league and hindered by allowing 20 HR's to opposing batters. Anna's most impressive accomplishment of the season was definitely her one shutout, as she kept the Vandals from scoring despite allowing 10 baserunners and only striking out 4. Despite the solid record and some supporting stats, true performance measuring stats such as a 116 FIP-, 98 ERA+, and 0.9 WAR are among the warning signs that led to this 49th position among the top 50.

48) CF Marcos Gonzalez - Vancouver Vandals https://i.imgur.com/Gb8eEJQ.png - 5.17

.225/.285/.354, 364 AB, 8 HR, 51 RBI, 77 wRC+, 0.9 WAR, +8.4 ZR, 1/8 SB/CS

Marcos represented the Vandals in the All-Star Game and served as their starting center fielder as they took home the league championship yet again. He was not much of a hitter for the team, with 77's in both OPS+ and wRC+ indicating that he was quite a bit below average. He also was allowed to try out his speed on the basepaths, which worked out well in terms of having the 6th most triples, but not so much when he was allowed to attempt stolen bases - he was a miserable 1 for 9 (11.1%). Although he lost out on the gold glove this season, his range and overall fielding skill is still unquestionable, and most of his value comes from that as he finished with a +8.4 ZR.

47) SP Khamati Kahn - San Antonio Sloths https://i.imgur.com/ZH5lZR6.png - 5.17

9-7 W-L, 4.61 ERA, 171.2 IP, 5.87 K/9, 1.40 WHIP, 2.2 WAR, 95 ERA+

Achmed's brother served as (I think?) the number 2 starter for the San Antonio Sloths throughout the season, winning 9 of his starts and losing only 7. While not quite as wild as our #46 finisher, Kahn did also manage to throw 11 wild pitches and was just 1 walk behind as he ended up with 7th most in the league. Some of his other most noteworthy stats include top 10 finishes in quality starts, quality start percentage, and the 7th fewest HR's allowed per 9 innings. He was also among the top finishers in total innings pitched and batters faced, showcasing his longevity as he finished up with a nice 2.2 WAR.

46) SP Darnell Turner - Death Valley Scorpions https://i.imgur.com/KfiO1hh.png - 5.33

7-8 W-L, 4.10 ERA, 162.1 IP, 7.54 K/9, 1.27 WHIP, 1/9 WAR, 103 ERA+

Turner is a pretty interesting case after serving as the #3 starter for Death Valley in Season 5. Despite the 7-8 win/loss record, he was a solid contributor for the team, finishing with a 1.9 WAR. He was also a top 10 starter from the league in many key areas, such as ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. Darnell had a weird juxtaposition in what I would consider the luck-based/inconsistent pitching stats: he had a low BABIP of .273 which indicates that he was lucky, but he then gave up 21 HR's while having one of the lowest GB% in the league, which is quite unlucky. Finally, Turner should probably be given the "Wild Thing" nickname after finishing 5th in the league in most walks thrown and 1st in wild pitches (11 wild pitches!).

45) C Jackson Jackson - Providence Crabs https://i.imgur.com/95I14kR.png - 5.33

.251/.317/.397, 362 AB, 8 HR, 35 RBI, 96 wRC+, 1.8 WAR,+0.2 ZR, 27.8 RTO%, 0/0 SB/CS

Lack of hard work is showing up on former S3 Silver Slugger and 5 time all-star as he had his worst year batting since rookie year. That was in full display when he was moved to the 7th position in the batting order. He isn't great behind the plate anymore with 10 errors and catching only 20 of 92 steal attempts. If he won't improve in near future newest generation of catchers is poised to take over former Providence stud.

44) SP Mookie Banks - Outer Banks Aviators https://i.imgur.com/7ExRfXy.png - 5.33

3-15 W-L, 3.87 ERA, 167.1 IP, 7.10 K/9, 1.33 WHIP, 2.6 WAR, 110 ERA+

Season 4 waiver pickup Mookie Banks returned this time on a rookie deal to Outer Banks. It was a very precarious campaign since even though he had 12 quality starts pickup only 3 Wins and league-leading 15 loses. Still, he was by far best of OBX pitchers and should only improve giving them the true ace in the future. Other than wins, he led Aviators pitchers in every significant pitching category. He even recorded the 4-hit shutout against the Vancouver Vandals with 6 strikeouts and 2 BB allowed, which is a sign of things to come.

43) 3B George Delrod - New York Voyagers https://i.imgur.com/1mBRoMe.png - 5.50

.274/.322/.435, 379 AB, 9 HR, 48 RBI, 109 wRC+, 2.0 WAR, +0.0 ZR, 2/1 SB/CS

Coming into S5 expectations for Delrod weren't high since his development really stalled in recent years. Instead, he came into season scorching hot having .945 OPS in May. He regressed later into the season but still was their second best bat. Even playing out of position at second base, he wasn't a liability there. Overall best season in his career, which is even more surprising considering it might be his last playing full time.

42) SP Eijun Wozy - Providence Crabs https://i.imgur.com/95I14kR.png - 5.50

8-9 W-L, 4.36 ERA, 157.0 IP, 6.08 K/9, 1.30 WHIP, 2.2 WAR, 98 ERA+

Only one of the Crabs starters having negative Win-Loss balance had an average year. As he is finesse pitcher he won't have eye-popping strikeout numbers and had respectable 1.3 WHIP. It was better campaign than in Season 4 when he had just 86 ERA+. Questions still stand if he can go back to the dominance he displayed in first three seasons.

41) 2B Kimetrius Webster - Outer Banks Aviators https://i.imgur.com/7ExRfXy.png - 5.50

.257/.321/.467, 362 AB, 17 HR, 56 RBI, 117 wRC+, 1.2 WAR, -2.2 ZR, 1/0 SB/CS

Just like Hawk Russell last year Kimetrius Webster had great rookie campaign being more than a positive batter. He led Outer Banks in several categories including HR, RBI and Slugging. His defense requires a lot of work, but that's expected considering he was drafted for his bat. Doubts remain how lefty friendly ballpark impacted his performance, but nonetheless, it was a very impressive season that bodes well for 2B future.

40) 2B Kenny McCormick - Outer Banks Aviators https://i.imgur.com/7ExRfXy.png – 5.67

.261/.325/.345, 417 AB, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 86 wRC+, 1.2 WAR, +0.8 ZR, 51/19 SB/CS

Coming in ranked 40th we have Outer Banks second baseman Kenny McCormick. He's been manning the Aviators middle infield since the creation of the league in addition to being the team's general manager. Over the course of his 5 seasons he's accumulated 7.9 WAR, won a Silver Slugger in Season 1 and has been named to the All-Star Game in each of the last 3 seasons.

39) 3B Simon Hans - San Antonio Sloths https://i.imgur.com/ZH5lZR6.png – 5.83

.269/.327/.406, 409 AB, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 100 wRC+, 2.0 WAR, +2.7 ZR, 1/0 SB/CS

Coming in at number 39 is Simon Hans. He's been manning the San Antonio hot corner ever since being drafted by them in the 7th round of the Season 2 draft. Since then he's had 2 All-Star Game selection and took home a Gold Glove in dominating fashion in Season 4.

38) CF Matthew Valentine - Providence Crabs https://i.imgur.com/95I14kR.png – 5.83

.260/.316/.416, 361 AB, 8 HR, 54 RBI, 101 wRC+, 2.3 WAR, +7.4 ZR, 0/0 SB/CS

Affectionately nicknamed "The Black Hole" by his teammates, Matthew Valentine has been patrolling center field for Providence since the league started. He may anything but a force at the plate, but he more than makes up for it by saving tons of runs on defense. He's won the CF Gold Glove twice, the only center fielder to take home the award multiple times, and has been an All-Star every season except his rookie year.

37) SP Knuckles Deep - Death Valley Scorpions https://i.imgur.com/KfiO1hh.png - 6.17

10-9 W-L, 3.91 ERA, 177.1 IP, 6.80 K/9, 1.31 WHIP, 2.3 WAR, 108 ERA+

Number 37 has a player with a top 10 name, Death Valley Scorpions pitcher Knuckles Deep. He's entering his final year in the league since announcing his retirement this past offseason but has accumulated a solid resume in his first 5 years in the league. He's been an All-Star twice, finished 3rd in Pitcher of the Year voting in Season 2, and he has one of the biggest claims to fame in league history: the league's first no-hitter, an 11 strikeout, 2 walk, shut down of the Sloths in Season 2.

36) CL Ludwig Groetzinger - New York Voyagers https://i.imgur.com/1mBRoMe.png – 6.33

8-4 W-L, 6 SV, 3.51 ERA, 82.0 IP, 7.35 K/9, 1.17 WHIP, 0.7 WAR, 120 ERA+

"The Swiss Miss" burst on the scene for the Voyagers in Season 5. In what has proven to be an amazing draft class all around, Groetzinger has made a name for himself coming out of the New York bullpen. He was awarded Rookie of the Year and would make the jump into the Voyager's front office to be their co-GM after just one season.

35) C Joffrey Baratheon - San Antonio Sloths https://i.imgur.com/ZH5lZR6.png – 6.33

.248/.325/.458, 343 AB, 17 HR, 60 RBI, 107 wRC+, 2.3 WAR, -1.0 ZR, 0/0 SB/CS

Joffrey Baratheon is a solid player who hits at a slightly above league average rate. How does that place him in the top 50 player rankings? Because of where he plays on the field. In S5 Baratheon was the second best offensive catcher in the league, and played pretty solidly behind the plate. The three time All Star was top 10 in home runs (though played in the most hitter friendly park in the league). Nonetheless with 17 homers and 60 RBI Baratheon was a valuable player in S5 and has the potential to be an All Star again in S6.

34) SP Goosebumps Walkaway - San Antonio Sloths https://i.imgur.com/ZH5lZR6.png – 6.67

3-1 W-L, 1 SV, 2.72 ERA, 39.2 IP, 14.09 K/9, 0.96 WHIP, 1.1 WAR, 162 ERA+

A top notch set up man for the San Antonio Sloths, Goosebumps Walkaway finds his way on to the list at 34. Though he only appeared in 28 games he was amazing in those games. Walkaway’s most impressive statistic was a 6-1 strikeout to walk ratio that helped lead him to have an impressive FIP. In his second season Walkaway had a good year, and it will be interesting to see if he makes the list in S6. I don’t think anyone would argue Walkaway is the 34th best player in the PBE.

33) 1B Lazaro Hernandez - Vancouver Vandals https://i.imgur.com/Gb8eEJQ.png – 6.67

.262/.344/.487, 378 AB, 20 HR, 77 RBI, 129 wRC+, 2.1 WAR, -0.2 ZR, 0/1 SB/CS

The 4 time world champion and perennial play off here, Lazaro Hernandez checks in at number 33. Lazaro was the silver slugger at first base (though he is not the highest ranked first baseman), and had arguably the best season of his career in S5. Lazaro set a career high in power numbers this season, hitting 20 home runs (7th in the league), bashing in 77 RBI (2nd in the league) and scoring 69 runs (6th in the league). When thinking of the Vandals offense Lazaro Hernandez is not the first name that comes to mind, but he’s a three time all-star and his five world series home runs have been a huge help to the 4 time champs.

32) SS Eduardo Dinero - Providence Crabs https://i.imgur.com/95I14kR.png – 6.67

.268/.333/.438, 411 AB, 13 HR, 58 RBI, 114 wRC+, 2.9 WAR, +1.8 ZR, 0/0 SB/CS

Eduardo Dinero is about average in terms of PBE short stops, and in a league where there are so many great short stops that is a major compliment. Dinero had a pretty good S5 season, but two random accomplishments stick out when you look at his player page. Dinero is one of the few PBE players who have hit for the cycle (he did it in S5 against the Scorpions), and he was the MVP of the All-Star game in the East’s win against the West. Dinero had a decent season fielding short stop and was an above average offensive player. This all made him worth about 3 wins above replacement level.

31) 1B Mike Boss - Providence Crabs https://i.imgur.com/95I14kR.png – 6.67

.254/.319/.488, 418 AB, 28 HR, 64 RBI, 121 wRC+, 2.1 WAR, +1.0 ZR, 0/0 SB/CS

When you think of Sluggers in the Pro Baseball experience one of the first players that comes to mind has hit the third most home runs in PBE history, Mike Boss. One of the few “three true outcomes” hitters in PBE Mike Boss is a home run and strikeout machine, finishing top 10 in home runs four times in his career and in strikeouts three times. Boss is 6th in PBE history in slugging percentage and was his usual self in S5. He was second in the league in home runs, and 6th in total bases. Mike Boss may not do it all, but what he does well he does better than almost anyone.

And there you have it! Congratulations to everyone! We will be back in a few days with the ranks 30-11!

Discuss!

Nice to see rookies are still able to break out to the Top 50 in their first season. Some players should get much bigger role soon too.

Jousu is probably some kind of European demigod hiding out in a deactivated NATO missile silo from the Cold War.

Given your history, I don't blame you for being a pessimist, but I am expecting you to show up. Remember, these are season rankings, not career.

When you step into the Crabs locker room, you’re not going just any old place. You’re going into THE underground fight club of intellect. Prepare to be mentally stimulated more than you could ever hope or imagine.
